Who would be the audience for your media product?
During our research, we concluded that most people who watch thriller films would be male and aged 17-25. I created an audience profile as found with the following link (audience profile).
Our research concluded that our audience would be:
- male
- 17-25
- employed
- interested in film
- independent
This is a breakdown of the reviews of The Blair Witch Project on the IMDB website (click here to go to the page). As you can see, there were 100,403 votes from men and just 23270 reviews from women, showing that over 80% of the reviews were from males. It also shows that men rated the film with an average of 6.4 out of 10, whereas women voted a score of just 6.1 out of 10. Males aged 18-29 rated The Blair Witch Project as 6.6 out of 10 (they made up over 1/3 of voters). The older age ranges voted the film as a lower score out of 10, with 18-29 year olds rating it as 6.5, 30-44 year olds rating the film as 6.3 and 45 and older voted the film as just 5.7. This shows us that the people most likely to watch and enjoy our thriller film are males aged 18-29.
Based on other research, I found out that 57% of men would watch a thriller film compared with 43% of women, and I have created a pie chart to demonstrate this data. Due to the fact that more men would watch thriller films than women, we decided to produce our opening sequence to target men.
Although we feel that we have successfully appealed men to our film, because the main characters are all female, it could also appeal to women too. Our film has a good story line and lots of action which is the main two things our audience interviews showed us females and males enjoyed (see our audience interviews below).
Similarly, we used lots of different camera angles, not just handheld POV shots, which gave us variation and probably held more interest for both genders. The range of sounds used, both diegetic and non-diegetic build up suspense which could also appeal to both sexes and many ages.
