In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products?

I have slowed down our final video in order to have the annotations on the screen for enough time to read.

Evaluation 2

How does your media product represent particular social groups?

Evaluation 3

What kind of media institution might distribute your product and why?

Evaluation 4

Who would be the audience for your media product?

During our research, we concluded that most people who watch thriller films would be male and aged 17-25. I created an audience profile as found with the following link (audience profile).
Our research concluded that our audience would be:
  • male
  • 17-25
  • employed
  • interested in film
  • independent
Since finishing our media project, I have conducted further secondary research into the audience of our media product.
This is a breakdown of the reviews of The Blair Witch Project on the IMDB website (click here to go to the page). As you can see, there were 100,403 votes from men and just 23270 reviews from women, showing that over 80% of the reviews were from males. It also shows that men rated the film with an average of 6.4 out of 10, whereas women voted a score of just 6.1 out of 10. Males aged 18-29 rated The Blair Witch Project as 6.6 out of 10 (they made up over 1/3 of voters). The older age ranges voted the film as a lower score out of 10, with 18-29 year olds rating it as 6.5, 30-44 year olds rating the film as 6.3 and 45 and older voted the film as just 5.7. This shows us that the people most likely to watch and enjoy our thriller film are males aged 18-29.

Based on other research, I found out that 57% of men would watch a thriller film compared with 43% of women, and I have created a pie chart to demonstrate this data. Due to the fact that more men would watch thriller films than women, we decided to produce our opening sequence to target men.
Although we feel that we have successfully appealed men to our film, because the main characters are all female, it could also appeal to women too. Our film has a good story line and lots of action which is the main two things our audience interviews showed us females and males enjoyed (see our audience interviews below).

Similarly, we used lots of different camera angles, not just handheld POV shots, which gave us variation and probably held more interest for both genders. The range of sounds used, both diegetic and non-diegetic build up suspense which could also appeal to both sexes and many ages.

Evaluation 5

How did you attract/address your audience?

Although difficult to target men with a film called Lily and only female characters (there would be more male characters later in the film - as policemen and walkers), we are still going to target 17-25 year old males. The content of our opening sequence should hopefully attract our target audience as it suggests that the rest of the film will be full of suspense, mystery and drama, and leave them on the edge of their seats.

I asked my family to write down 5 words that they thought of when watching our opening sequence, this is a Wordle image showing the words that they thought of.

It may be quite difficult to attract the right audience because our opening sequence suggests a female dominated film which means that our target audience of males might not be able to empathise with the characters. However, it may be more appealing to a male audience because of the female domination, so it could go either way, which is why we did the following survey, asking 8 males aged 16/17.

This survey shows that 75% of the viewers of our opening sequence would go and watch it in the film, for a variety of reasons. This tells us that although we have made a female dominated film, males still want to watch it.

Post-Production Audience Profile

This is Chris. He is 19 years old and is self-employed. He runs two different companies full time but still has time to take his girlfriend to the cinema at least once a week. They both enjoy watching a variety of film genres including action, drama and comedy, but their favourite is Thriller films. Recently, he took his girlfriend to see Starred Up (2014), a thriller film about a violent young offender who is transferred to an adult prison where he finally meets his match - his father.
Chris and his girlfriend both agree that the best films are the ones that can make you laugh, cry, sweat, and sit on the edge of your seat all in the space of the 90 minute length of the film.
Because Chris is self employed, he has a high disposable income to spend on going to the cinema, buying DVDs and he has also subscribed to Empire Online on his iPad. He is passionate about film and all of his friends go to him to ask his opinion on the latest films, because they know he's probably already seen it and can save them the cost of the cinema ticket if he doesn't think a film is worth seeing!

This is a Wordle image of Chris's favourite films, and noticeably they all have conventions of Thriller films.

After finishing our project, I asked Chris his opinion on our film.

"This looks really good, if I saw this advertised in the cinema or something I would definitely go and watch it. I particularly like the sound effects, especially the motif for Lily. The part where one character runs into a tree and then it swaps to another character running away from the tree is amazing editing. This two minute clip definitely appeals to me and has intrigued me already into who the surviving girl is and how the story would play out in the rest of the film. I did notice that there is only female characters in this opening, and although this makes me question the different roles of the characters (can one be dominant over the others?) it's a really interesting choice of casting. I like the part at the end of the clip with the radio montage telling us the background of why Lily is in the woods in the first place, but still leaves me wondering who abducted her from her parents and where that character is, and also why this person has taken Lily and is now getting Lily to take these three girls one by one. This is fantastically put together and the contrast between the happy scenes and the darker scenes in the opening sequence really emphasise how quickly these girls lives change when they meet Lily. I would definitely pay to watch this in the cinema, it has really captured my attention and I wish it was a real film to watch the entire thing!"

I then asked Sam, 21 to watch our film and comment on it.

"The sound effects used are really good, the music box sound is very creepy and at one point made the hair on my arms stand up. The screams are recorded really well too, it makes you feel scared on behalf of the characters who are running away in the woods. There's a great variety of shots in the sequence as well, I particularly like the one with the foot snapping the twig, and also the bit where the camera is on the ground and somebody runs past but all you can see is their legs so you don't know who it is that's running. If I saw this advertised I would definitely go and watch it in the cinema."

James, 18 also commented:

"This is great! The camera shots used are really awesome, there's such a variety and there's some really powerful ones. I love the bit where Ida (I think it's her) turns around to see Lily's silhouette standing behind her. The orange glow around her head makes her look like an angel, juxtaposing to the fact that she's the bad girl. The sound effects are really good, the thunder when they're running through the woods emphasises the terror that they are feeling and the distress of the situation they're in. The radio montage at the end is really good, it reminds me of the bit in Shaun of The Dead where they have the news on the television in the background, subtly explaining the story that the main characters are unaware of."

We also had a lot of comments on Facebook, as shown in the screenshots below.

This shows us that our target audience (male 17-25) would be interested in watching our film if it was distributed. Chris and Sam were attracted to our film because of the motif of the music box sound for Lily, and also our editing technique of merging both Ida and Keira when they were running near the tree. This was also liked by Anne-Marie, 41. Chris was also attracted to our film through the story line and he also questioned the roles of our characters, showing a keen interest in our film. Rosie, 17, also liked the story line, commenting, "I liked that from this trailer, the viewer could understand what the film is going to be about, but it doesn't give anything away at the same time." The radio montage sound effect also attracted Chris, James and Amy, 14, to our film, with James comparing this effect with one used in Shaun of The Dead. The contrast between happy and scary scenes also attracted James, Chris and Simon, 18, to the film. Everyone who commented said that they would watch our film in the cinema if it was a real film, showing that we have successfully appealed to them.

Schedule

Camera work for our final piece

Camera Work

Pan

At the start of our title sequence we are going to use a pan as our establishing shot of Haytor rock on Dartmoor.

Camera Shakes

At another point in our scene, to contrast from the happy to sad situations, we are going to have the camera shake and then crash to the floor.

Close ups

We are going to use close ups of our characters to introduce them with their titles on the screen at the same time, at angles similar to this. However when we film this the characters will not be looking at the camera.
We are also going to use a close up, slightly closer this time, when Ida turns around to see Lily's face in the shot.

Extreme Close Up

There will be an extreme close up of Ida's eyes as she looks around to see what's going on and where the noise is coming from.

Hand Held camera work

We are going to use hand held camera work when Lily is chasing Ida. The camera will be from Lily's Point Of View, showing Ida running through the woods away from whatever is chasing her. We used an example of this in our Preliminary film, as shown below from 1.45 to 1.47. However, for our final piece the camera will be slightly further away than in this clip, showing Ida's full body.

Long Shot

We will use a long shot when Ida, Teagan and Keira run down the hill, showing how empty their surroundings are and how alone they are. The girls will run past the camera and the camera will then either cut to follow them, using the 180 degree rule, or pan around to follow the girls down the hill.

Audience Profile

Audience Research Analysis
From the research we have conducted, I have decided that my target audience should be 17-25 year old males. My personal research shows that the majority of people who would watch a thriller film are male (59%) and aged 15 to 25 (40%). However, thrillers contain many sub-genres, so perhaps with particular themes e.g. action, comedy, crime, psychological etc, our thriller may appeal to many other audiences other than our target. Many of our interviewees said that they liked action films, so perhaps if we made our film an action thriller then we could attract a wider audience and appeal to a wider range of people. We shouldn't limit ourselves to only males aged 17-25 as they are a small section of the population, as described in the following statement adapted from the national statistics data website.
"According to the national statistics data released by the UK government in mid-2007 there were 31.0 million women compared with 29.9 million men in the UK population. It was found that boys outnumbered girls and women outnumbered men because at all ages above 31, women outnumbered men."
This shows us that up to the age of 31, boys outnumber girls. Therefore we are targeting a big section of the population, but should not limit ourselves to this segregation of the community. Many girls enjoy thrillers too, so we should include characteristics in our film that girls want to see too, to avoid limiting our audience.

We should probably make our film more of a 15 rated film as it doesn't seem that many people under 15 would want to watch a thriller (as shown in the chart opposite).  However, our research showed that older men (45 year olds) can also enjoy thrillers so we need to try to allow our film to be appealing to a wide range of people, without putting off our main target audience of males aged 17 to 25.

Audience Profile
This is Dan. He is 24 years old and at the higher end of our target audience age range. He lives with his girlfriend and their puppy in their own flat in Somerset. He is currently doing an apprenticeship as part of his college course and is training in management. He enjoys walking his dog, playing darts with his friends and earning money. His favourite films include I Am Legend; Batman - The Dark Knight Rises; Inception; Psycho; 2012; Hostel and The Colour Purple. His favourite hobby is creating music - he plays guitar, drums, and can sing too. He has recorded many of his own songs in professional studios and dreams of becoming an international artist in a rock band.
He enjoys thrillers partly because he really enjoys sport and the suspense of not knowing who will win. This is reflected in thrillers because in many of them, the protagonist and antagonists are unclear and the audience are unaware of who will become victorious by the end of the film. Being 24, Dan mostly enjoys 18 rated films that are more daring with their storyline and content. Dan says "I really enjoy sitting in a cinema and literally sitting on the edge of my seat, my palms sweating and my heart racing because I have no idea what is about to happen next in the film." This is definitely a feature of thriller films, which explains why he likes them so much. Dan is our ideal target audience because he is the type of person who would enjoy a thriller film and then have the urge to tell everybody he knows about how amazing it was. Dan is often spending time on social networking sites such as Facebook and Twitter, so he would be a good target audience because he is the type of viewer who would rave about a film that he enjoys, so the film would get a good amount of word-of-mouth advertising. His frequent social media use coincides with his love for his Xbox and PlayStation consoles, always keeping up with technology. Because Dan enjoys keeping up to date with technology, in order to attract him to watching our film we should make it quite technologically advanced (although not bordering into the sci-fi genre).

Audience Interviews

This is a collection of all of our audience interviews. We spent 2 lessons going around school interviewing people to get an idea of who our target audience is. Maddie also borrowed the camera after school and interviewed some of her family.
I did get 3 more interviews that weren't included in the final video, so I've included them below.

Simon (45)
What is your favourite genre? Thriller
What if your favourite film? The Colour Purple
What do you expect to see in a film? Realism, it's good when the film is made to look like it could actually happen in real life - it adds to the suspense of the film.
Do you like Thriller films? Why/why not? Yes, I like films that make me sit on the edge of my seat and give me sweaty palms - that's the sign of a good film when it makes you anxious.
Do you like films where there is a clear good vs evil? No, it is better when the good vs evil is much more subtle and leaves more of a guessing game within the film for the audience.
What film rating do you prefer to watch? 15s are best in my opinion, as 18s tend to go over the top with the themes and take advantage of their freedom within contents. 15 rated films tend to be more gripping and focus on the plot and characters rather than the gory-ness that is found in 18s.

Chris (18)
What is your favourite genre? Comedies or thrillers
What if your favourite film? Walking With Dinosaurs / The Wolf of Wall Street
What do you expect to see in a film? Lots of suspense and comedy, the suspense keeps your attention while watching the film and the comedy (subtle comedy is best) lightens the atmosphere and also subtly distracts your attention from what is going to happen next to allow you to be more surprised when something jumpy then happens.
Do you like Thriller films? Why/why not? Yes. It's enticing to not know what will happen next - a bad film would have scenes that you could guess will happen; keeping the audience unaware of what is about to happen is much better.
Do you like films where there is a clear good vs evil? Yes, I love that the bad guys are always one step ahead than the good guys, even one step ahead of the audience.
What film rating do you prefer to watch? PGs, 15s or 18s.

Daniel (24)
What is your favourite genre? Thriller
What if your favourite film? Psycho
What do you expect to see in a film? I love suspense and crime
Do you like Thriller films? Why/why not? Yes, crime is great and I like watching films that make my heart race
Do you like films where there is a clear good vs evil? Yes, but keeping the audience guessing who the bad guy is - that's better.
What film rating do you prefer to watch? 18s because they are usually more daring with the plot.

Weekly Films

As of January, we now have an ongoing homework to watch a film every week. This is the post where I will document all films that I watch and give a short review of them all.
**Spoilers throughout**

1) Last Vegas

Date of viewing: 11th January 2014
This weekend I watched Last Vegas, a film about 4 old men going to Las Vegas for a weekend for a stag-do. It is absolutely hilarious and a very good film, although I wouldn't recommend watching it with your granddad and parents as I did! Morgan Freeman was as brilliant as ever, and I would recommend this film to anyone. I did cry at one point in the film, when Paddy (Robert De Niro) finds out that the love of his life actually chose to date Billy first, before Billy persuaded Sophie to choose Paddy instead, because "you were right for her, I wasn't". It is a very heart warming film and certainly gave me the determination that when I get old, I will enjoy my life as much as they did rather than just wait for death. The whole film is full of comedy, despite crying, I did actually laugh throughout. Last Vegas is a brilliant film.
Rating: 7/10
Classification: 12A
Genre: Comedy

2) The Possession

Date of viewing: 1st February 2014
I watched The Possession on Netflix this weekend. It is a thriller/horror film about a young girl who gets possessed by an evil spirit determined to take an innocent soul. The story focuses around an old wooden box that Emily buys from a yard sale in her dad's new neighbourhood. She opens the box in her room and finds a ring, and wears it. This then leads to her becoming possessed by an evil spirit that was once contained inside this wooden box. The plot then continues to track her father's attempts to save his daughter from the evil spirit inside her. The film is very good as I was constantly having to hold my sisters hand with white knuckles as we did not know what would happen next. There was many moments when I assumed that something was going to happen and the music encouraged something to suddenly happen, but then things calm again. This kept me on the edge of my seat and gave me sweaty palms - a sign of a really amazing film!
Rating: 8/10
Classification: 15
Genre: Horror

3) Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory
Date of viewing: 2nd February 2014
This weekend I also watched the 1971 musical film of Willy Wonka and The Chocolate Factory. It is such a feel-good film and can cheer anybody up! It is probably one of my favourite films of all time as it really stretches peoples' imaginations and makes everybody feel young and takes them back to their childhood. My favourite scene is when they all start licking the fruit-flavoured wall paper - I've always wanted my own!
Rating: 9/10
Classification: U Genre: Fantasy / Musical

4) About Time
Date of viewing: 8th February 2014
About Time is my favourite film at the moment. I first watched it in the cinema in September, and literally counted down the days for the dvd release so that I could watch it again! I enjoyed the film so much in September that I couldn't wait to share it with my parents and best friend, so on Saturday we all watched it together. About Time is a film about a young man who is told at 21 that he can time travel, as can his father and all the men of their family. It is an incredible film and makes me cry every time I watch it. I particularly like how emotional it is and how it tugs on your heart strings at times in the film, particularly when (SPOILER) he goes back in time before the birth of his daughter, and returns to having a son instead. It is also incredibly emotional when he agrees to having another child with his wife, meaning that he can't go back in time to spend time with his father (who dies of cancer) anymore. There are many inspirational quotes that come from this film, these are some of my favourites (taken from iMDB):
"We're all traveling through time together, every day of our lives. All we can do is do our best to relish this remarkable ride."
"Life's a mixed bag, no matter who you are."
About Time is by far my favourite film currently because it genuinely changed my outlook on life, it makes you appreciate every day as if it is your last. It's about love, it's about life, it's About Time.
I leave you with this thought:
If you could go back in time to any point in your life so far, what would you change?
Rating: 10/10
Classification: 12A
Genre: Drama/Romantic Comedy

5) The Hunger Games
Date of viewing: 20th February 2014
The Hunger Games is one of my favourite films, as I really enjoy the plot. The camera work and editing matches the pace of each scene and the emotions of the characters very well. It fits in with the Thriller genre because it keeps the audience interested through the use of a variety of shots and plot twists. There are many scenes that the audience are unaware of what will happen next, which is one of the conventions of a thriller in the fact that it keeps the audience guessing. There are also many scenes that spark emotions in the audience, for example when Roo dies it made me and my cousins cry whilst watching it. The audience are often on the edge of their seats as the plot unfolds and more and more drama occurs.
Rating: 7/10
Classification: 12A
Genre: Action/Thriller

6) Non-Stop
Date of viewing: Tuesday 18th March
This was a film about a plane that was hi-jacked between LA and London. The plot is very good and keeps the audience guessing about who it is on the plane who is hi-jacking it.
I really enjoyed this film because it left me on the edge of my seat. At one point during the film, an audience member in the cinema screamed as a sudden action happened.
Throughout the film I kept thinking that I knew who was the person hi-jacking it, but then the story unfolds and then right at the end of the film we learn that it was somebody completely unexpected. This film made me laugh, cry and also gave me sweaty palms, meaning it was a very good film!

Rating: 8/10
Classification: 12A
Genre: Action/Thriller

7) Starred Up
Date of viewing: Wednesday 26th March
This film is about a violent young offender who is transferred to an adult prison and finally meets his match - his father. The film was full of violence and action, also relating to psychological issues. Although this film had a lot of suspense, by the end of it, I didn't understand what the storyline had been. It seemed to be full of violence and have gruesome scenes but the only storyline throughout the 90minute film was that he met his dad in prison and they only made up just as his father was being transferred to a different prison. I would not watch this film again.

Rating: 3/10
Classification: 18
Genre: Drama / Psychological thriller

8) Transcendence
Date of viewing: Saturday 26th April
Transcendence official synopsis: Dr. Will Caster (Johnny Depp) is the foremost researcher in the field of Artificial Intelligence, working to create a sentient machine that combines the collective intelligence of everything ever known with the full range of human emotions.  His highly controversial experiments have made him famous, but they have also made him the prime target of anti-technology extremists who will do whatever it takes to stop him. However, in their attempt to destroy Will, they inadvertently become the catalyst for him to succeed—to be a participant in his own transcendence.  For his wife Evelyn (Rebecca Hall) and best friend Max Waters (Paul Bettany), both fellow researchers, the question is not if they can…but if they should. Their worst fears are realized as Will’s thirst for knowledge evolves into a seemingly omnipresent quest for power, to what end is unknown.  The only thing that is becoming terrifyingly clear is there may be no way to stop him.
This film was really good, it made me cry when Will dies, and it made my palms sweaty as the drama unfolded. The film is full of sci-fi and really makes you wonder what computers may one day be capable of. I personally really enjoyed this film, however my friend didn't enjoy it so much and said it got more boring as it went on, as it became possible to guess what might happen next.
Rating: 9/10
Classification: 12A
Genre: Sci-Fi / Drama

9) The Other Woman
Date of viewing: Friday 2nd May
I watched this film recently and really enjoyed it. It is absolutely hilarious and made myself and the rest of the audience laugh throughout the film. Although gory at one point (the cheating husband walks into a glass wall which shatters and breaks his nose) the whole film was very enjoyable and I would happily watch it again on a winter evening. There was a huge twist at the end of the film which surprised everybody. However, it is strange that Nicki Minaj is in it as a receptionist, as I know her as a crazy pop singer and it was hard to see her as the character and not the person! It is a brilliant chick flick and I would recommend it to all of my female friends!
Rating: 9/10
Classification: 12A
Genre: Comedy

10) Bad Neighbours
Date of viewing: Monday 5th May
Bad Neighbours is a hilarious film about a couple who move into a good neighbourhood with their newborn daughter, only to find out that a college fraternity (university group) is moving in next door. The first night of them being neighbours, the college seniors throw a huge house party, prompting Mac and Kelly Radner to ask them to turn the music down a bit, which leads to them partying all night with the students. Things soon turn bitter when the couple call the police on the students, starting a "war" between the students and the couple. The war consists of both dangerous and hilarious pranks, with Mac and Kelly sabotaging the frat's house, attempting to get them on probation with the college and force them to move away from the area.
I would love to watch this film again, it is hilarious and made me cry with laughter. I wouldn't recommend that anybody watches this film with their parents as there are a lot of sexual references!
Rating: 9/10 - I would score it 10 but a lot of the funniest parts were advertised in the trailer so there were less surprises with the pranks.
Classification: 15
Genre: Comedy

Storyline

  • Starts with a classroom scene with M and E and the guys at the back of the class, A walks in late and E,M&boys laugh at her as she sits at the front of the class on her own. Miss Moore says "Why are you late again Aisling?" A,"I was _________" (EXAM BOARD SHOT*)
  • M throws a pen at A's head (MATCH ON ACTION)
  • Talking about internal fears, E says "I'm scared of spiders" M says "I'm scared of the dark" Matt says "Oh Harry is scared of girls miss!"  all laugh, then A says "I'm not scared of anything" (ZOOM ON A'S FACE)
  • (SOUND OF SCHOOL BELL) At the end of class, (ZOOM ON FOLDER LEFT ON THE FLOOR) M pushes A to the floor and E and M walk out of the school laughing about A, show clip of "Torquay Boys Grammar School"...M realises she forgot her folder so goes back inside while E waits outside
  • Then films M inside the school, lights are flickering. When light is on, filming behind M, light goes off (SOUND OF DOOR CREAKING) and when goes back on, filming facing M and can see A behind her (SHOT REVERSE SHOT)
  • M walks inside the classroom to get the folder, lights flick off. Camera is in the corner of the room facing the door, can see M in the foreground looking scared, A in the doorway creating a silhouette, face unshown. M ducks under the desk and screams
  • Cuts to E outside texting M "Where are you? What's taking you so long?" (MATCH ON ACTION) hears M screaming from inside, runs inside after her
  • E runs into the classroom with M under the desk, lights on and no sign of A, "What's wrong with you?' M  is speechless
  • Both leave classroom and E drops phone on the floor, camera zooms on phone as they walk away, filmed from the floor. See a hand pick it up - A as they walk away.

Preliminary Task Analysis

Analysis of another student's preliminary task

The Fellowship

Immediately at the start of this short film, the storyline is identified, allowing the audience to follow the film easily. We can immediately see that there is two characters, one is pushing the other around so clearly has more power over the other. However, the film doesn't come across as a Thriller, more of an action film if anything.

Match on action

This is the first part of the match on action as one character pushes the other along the corridor.

This is the second part of the match on action, a birds eye view of the push.

Shot reverse shot

This is the shot reverse shot as we can see them walking down the corridor from behind...
...and in front.

180 Degree Rule

1)

2)

In this scene during their conversation the 180 degree rule isn't broken at all.

My preliminary task

When I come to do my own preliminary task I will ensure that my film sticks with the Thriller genre and has many of the conventions of a thriller as this one deviates from the genre. I will also use lighting and soundtrack to my advantage to emphasise the suspense and atmosphere. They used a variety of camera shots and angles so I will try and use a similar variety of angles in order to keep my audience interested in my film. I will use the camera angles to represent the antagonist and protagonists differently, to encourage the audience to pity the innocent and fear the evil.
